  • All Staff: Choose ONE Keynote and ONE Lunch

  • Required Sessions: Attend sessions that are noted as required for your role. This will be communicated from the department or area you work with (Exceptional Children, Student Services, etc.). 

  • Filtering Sessions: You can filter sessions by clicking “Filter By Type” on the left-hand side of the page on the desktop version of Sched. “All Teachers” Sessions are for all staff. “K-2 Teachers” are targeted for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade Teachers, 9-12 Teachers for High School teachers, etc. For example, a Kindergarten teacher can click “K-2 Teachers” and see all sessions that would apply to them. You can further filter by sub-type in each area, by hovering over the type: review session titles and descriptions for more specific information. The search feature in the top right is also helpful for finding sessions using keywords.

  • Networking and Collaboration Sessions: These sessions are provided for many content areas, grade levels, and specialty areas. Filter by the session type that best matches your role to see if a Networking and Collaboration/Job Alike session is offered.

This presentation will provide information to attendees about what our Platform provides for your district. It covers both aspects of our platform (our award-winning game-based learning video games and our curricular resources). It explains what game-based learning is and how our games teach high school chemistry and physical science learning standards as well as the middle school physical science standards. In addition, we will discuss the plethora of curricular resources our platform offers for their teachers for all MS Physical Science, HS Chemistry & HS Physical Science classrooms. We also have STEM career focused curricular resources available that help students learn about different STEM careers.

Video Games in Education- Engaging Students in their World

Purpose: Increase student engagement by using video games as a relevant resource and educational technology source.

Objective: Educators will expand their understanding of video games and how they can be used productively in an education setting in order to build student engagement.

Engagement: Introduce topic by informing educators about NC state esport/education vision (increasing tech sector through K-12 pipeline by providing technology grants to schools). Discuss benefits video games can provide: problem solving skills, collaboration, perseverance and sometimes literacy. Provide examples of integrating video games into existing curriculum (identifying story elements, collaborative writing, multi-step math problems). Share existing educational lesson plans from video game sources, such as Fortnite Creative lesson plans: Civil Rights, Sustainable development, Rube Goldberg (force and motion) and Minecraft for Education learning modules.

In this session we will look at resources to enrich and engage our higher readers in the lower grades. We will learn about resources such as Jacob’s Ladder, Wordly Wise, Analogies, snipbits, and Post- Cards and how we can use them to enrich our advanced learners. These resources can be used for interventions and small groups. We will also brainstorm additional activities that can be using the above resources.

Using Nursery Rhymes during Heggerty

K-1 teachers will learn how to use Nursery Rhymes during their Heggerty block. Nursery Rhymes build language, vocabulary and social skills. They also open the door to creativity and a sense of confidence for early readers. Teachers will receive copies of nursery rhymes that are used in Heggerty as well as weekly lesson plans that can be used to help support each nursery rhyme.

Discover the power of Heggerty in fostering phonemic awareness and laying the foundation for literacy success in your elementary classroom! Designed for K-1 teachers new to the county or these specific grade levels, we will explore practical techniques for integrating Heggerty into daily instruction. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of phonemic awareness and its critical role in developing early literacy skills and explore a variety of engaging and multi-sensory activities provided by the Heggerty program to promote phonemic awareness skills, including rhyming, blending, segmenting, and phoneme manipulation.
