Monday August 5, 2024 9:35am - 10:20am EDT
307
Do you struggle finding ways to spark students’ interest and keep them engaged throughout the lesson? If so, this session is for you. Concept Attainment is an activating, instructional strategy that engages all students by using their prior knowledge as a gateway to learning content-specific concepts. This session models how to utilize and implement this strategy within any curriculum. Throughout the session, participants will have several opportunities to learn both individually and collaboratively while also utilizing bits of technology and various formative assessments. Participants will leave with an example presentation to use with students, a collectively-brainstormed list of concepts that could be used within their curriculum, and a clear understanding of how to quickly and seamlessly implement the strategy.

Assessment & Feedback
Monday August 5, 2024 11:40am - 12:25pm EDT
307
Participants will focus on how to provide feedback that allows students to have access to true understanding of curricular content. As educators we have to be cognizant of the way in which we provide feedback to students; are we to narrow in what we say or do we say just enough to ensure true understanding? In this session we will engage in activities that let us see how we can hone in on effective practices for feedback with assessments and beyond.

Practical and Realistic Strategies for Differentiating Instruction
Tuesday August 6, 2024 11:40am - 12:25pm EDT
307
Teachers inherently differentiate instruction based on learner interest, readiness and profile on a daily basis. Sometimes we aren’t even aware we are implementing this valuable practice. The purpose of this presentation is to create an awareness of the differentiation strategies teachers already use, and to share new practical and realistic key strategies teachers can use that support differentiation. Topics covered include using formal and informal data to differentiate instruction based on student interest, readiness and learner profile. Other topics include flexible grouping and learning more about multiple ways to vary the level of challenge in tiered tasks. Participants will leave with meaningful strategies they can implement at any point in the school year to support all students.

Beyond the Basics: Mastering Literacy Differentiation with A, C, D [Abstractness, Complexity & Depth]
Tuesday August 6, 2024 12:45pm - 1:30pm EDT
307
It is often challenging for teachers to grow gifted and advanced readers. Infusing depth, integrating complexity, and adding abstractness are strategies for cultivating growth and challenging and engaging our gifted and advanced readers. Most educators use the terms depth and complexity interchangeably. Through this session, participants will learn the differences between depth and complexity and experience first-hand how to add these differentiation features to any piece of text. We will read a short complex piece of literature and the strategies will be modeled, then participants will have a chance to practice in the session. Hands-on practice and active engagement will empower participants to apply these practices immediately! Session takeaways will include collaborative Google Docs built within the session that contain depth questions and questions that integrate complexity. They will also have access to the slide deck with embedded resources, including Literary Analysis Wheels and Cross-Impact Matrices. This engaging session specifically aligns to the CCS Strategic Plan goal of Learning & Teaching and increasing access to advanced academic opportunities for all students. The high-level strategies shared during this session are low-prep and yield maximum impact for diverse learners. Additionally, they are not just for gifted and advanced learners; they can cultivate growth in all learners by providing multiple entry points for learners to access rigorous content and engage in critical thinking.
