Understanding the College Admissions Process for Prospective Performing Arts Majors
Monday August 5, 2024 10:40am - 11:25am EDT
303
This session is intended to educate high school guidance counselors on how the college admissions process differs for prospective performing arts majors from that of the typical incoming college freshman. Often times our high school students do not realize until it is too late that they need to submit pre-screening videos, prepare for on campus auditions, and be admitted to specific program areas in addition to the college as a whole. Being unprepared can cost students valuable time and money as a late entry to a performing arts program will inevitably delay a student's college graduation. This session will discuss what we can do throughout a student's high school career to ensure that they have the best foundational coursework and advance knowledge to help them successfully navigate the college admissions process.

Evolving Support Structures: Understanding Life without a Dedicated MTSS Coach Position
Monday August 5, 2024 12:45pm - 1:30pm EDT
In this session, we delve into the dynamic landscape of support structures within educational settings that our school has followed without a dedicated MTSS Coach position. With the absence of this crucial role, schools often find themselves navigating uncharted territories, requiring them to adapt and innovate in their approach to student support.

We will explore the various challenges faced by schools when they transition away from a dedicated MTSS Coach to a fully integrated team approach. We will include how we approached identifying gaps in support, redefining roles and responsibilities, and maintaining continuity in student interventions. Through shared experiences and collective insights, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the complexities inherent in such transitions.

Moreover, this session will highlight the resilience and resourcefulness of whole-school educational communities as they evolve their support structures to meet the diverse needs of students. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange strategies, best practices, and lessons learned from their own journeys implementing an MTSS Framework through a truly integrated team approach.

By fostering an open dialogue and collaborative learning environment, this session aims to empower educators with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate implementation of an MTSS Framework without a dedicated Coach position, ultimately ensuring the continued success and well-being of all students within their school communities.

CORE Word of the Day: Level Up Your Adapted Curriculum ELA Lesson in a Snap!
Monday August 5, 2024 1:35pm - 2:20pm EDT
337
This session will provide adaptive curriculum educators a simple routine for daily AAC core vocabulary instruction. This routine is intended to enhance the instructional value of common strategies like “core word of the week.” Many students with significant disabilities benefit from explicit, targeted instruction in the graphic symbols that represent words in their AAC. The goal of this instruction is to develop the thinking and problem-solving skills of using graphic symbols to communicate. The goal is not to teach rote, isolated symbol recognition, such as indicating the correct symbol on demand to mastery. However, this instruction is an opportunity for educators to monitor student progress with graphic symbol knowledge. Comprehensive literacy instruction includes the use of these symbols in emergent literacy routines such as shared writing and shared reading.  Attendees will be provided with an instantly implementable daily routine to integrate CORE words and literacy strategies into their adapted ELA lessons.

Supporting Parents with Anxious Children - A Book Study
Tuesday August 6, 2024 11:40am - 12:25pm EDT
304
Parenting an anxious child means facing constant challenges and questions: When should parents help children avoid anxiety-provoking situations, and when should they encourage them to face their fears? Left untreated, anxiety disorders can make it hard for students to get schoolwork done or study. It may affect their relationships with peers and teachers, too. In some cases, students with anxiety disorders miss a lot of school days. Or they may avoid school altogether.

The SISP team at Cox Mill Elementary will share how they developed and implemented a parent book study to support student wellness goals and address the area of emotional regulation. Breaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD by Eli R. Lebowitz, PhD. is the first and only book to provide a completely parent-based treatment program for child and adolescent anxiety. Through this book study, parents learned how to alleviate their children’s anxiety by changing the way they themselves respond to their children’s symptoms.

Student Mentoring Program = Greater Sense of Belonging and Community
Tuesday August 6, 2024 1:35pm - 2:20pm EDT
403
The purpose of this session is to share how we implemented a school-wide Staff Mentoring program to support students in 4th and 5th grade who rated themselves low on the student wellness survey. Specifically, in the areas of sense of belonging and/or indicating having no supports in their life. We used the Panorama intervention called, 2 x 10, and matched students with parent permission to a staff mentor. During this session we will share the resources we used, what worked well, the lessons we learned as well as input/feedback from those involved in this intervention (family members, staff members and students). As a result of attending this session, those interested should be ready and equipped to start a similar program at their site.
