Succeeding While Stuttering
Tuesday August 6, 2024 12:45pm - 1:30pm EDT
303
This session will allow you to learn about how to support students who stutter using cognitive behavior approaches. Students often get told around school to “slow down”, “take a breath”, “think before you speak” or they just get interrupted. These statements can lead to students who may avoid speaking or not saying what they want to say in the classroom due to concerns about stuttering. You will learn about how stuttering can impact students emotionally and socially in the school environment. During this session you will be practicing using different ways to support and interact with students in the classroom when they have to answer questions, share their ideas, and give oral presentations. Speech Language Pathologists will leave with therapy ideas to use to help their students feel empowered to use their speech in all environments around the school. Everyone who interacts with students in schools will have a toolbox of ways to support students in the school evironment and avoid the statements that hurt these students the most and support you in becoming an advocate!
