Cabarrus County Schools cites student wellness as one of its main objectives. There are many ways to promote wellness at the school level. This workshop will focus on how arts-integrated social-emotional activities can create relatable, authentic spaces that enable students to connect with their emotions.

Presenters will engage the audience through case study break-out groups, ensuring an interactive, hands-on learning experience that provides attendees with concrete practice and resources to take back to their classrooms. Attendees will learn about art-based activities that can be utilized for social-emotional development, differentiated instruction, and the creation of authentic spaces. In breakout groups, case studies will be provided for participants where the group will brainstorm how they can use art-based activities to support the students.

Art-based activities can make learning more approachable by presenting concepts visually and tactilely. It promotes active, experiential learning that helps students to develop concrete experiences. There are often times when one does not quite have the words to describe what is happening, but they are able to express it through another modality. Art activities help students develop critical thinking skills, and can help with emotional regulation. This can help create more equitable learning spaces for all. The art modalities covered in this workshop will include sculpting and painting as well as technologically-infused tools such as flocabulary lyric lab and arti. This workshop will provide tools for staff in k-12 across disciplines with the goal of presenting new strategies to use when working towards the county mission of student wellness.
